A Honeydue alternative that never connects to your bank

The main difference between Honeydue and Spendy is where the numbers come from. Honeydue is built around linked bank accounts and is free with optional tips. Spendy is manual entry with no bank connection, and it is free for up to 3 household members. If you want balances pulled in automatically, Honeydue is the fit. If you want a budget with nothing to connect, read on.

What Honeydue does well

Honeydue is a finance app for couples, with iPhone and Android apps listed on its site. It is free with no paywall; it asks for an optional monthly tip, which the App Store lists at $0.99 to $9.99.

Its support site has a Bank Connection and Updates section, and the App Store text says it shows balances across institutions. For each linked account you choose whether your partner sees balances and transactions, balances only, or nothing. It also lists expense splitting and settlement tools, bill reminders, budget limits and in-app chat.

Where Spendy differs: nothing to connect

Anything that syncs from a bank depends on a chain: your bank, a connection service in the middle, and the app. Any link in it can go out of date or fail. Spendy has no chain. Whatever is in the budget is what someone typed, so there is nothing to re-authorise and no bank credentials stored.

The cost is a few seconds per expense and the habit of doing it at the till. The case for manual entry is the reliability, and the side effect is that you notice what you spend.

Spendy new expense screen with an amount of $86.40 entered, a row of category chips with Groceries selected, and a Save button
Amount, category, save. This is the whole of how a number gets into Spendy.

Sharing and cost compared

In Spendy one household holds one budget and everyone in it sees the same totals, with a breakdown per person. Roles are Owner, Editor and Viewer, and a Viewer is read-only. There is no per-account sharing setting because there are no accounts.

Both are free to start. Spendy is free for a household of up to 3 people, with unlimited transactions, budgets and categories; Premium+ raises it to 10. Honeydue is free with an optional tip. Spendy is iPhone only, so it does not work if one of you uses Android.

When to stay with Honeydue

Stay with Honeydue if you want accounts linked so balances appear without typing, if you want settlement tools and bill reminders in the same app, or if one of you is on Android. Spendy has no settle-up feature; it shows who paid what, and you transfer the difference yourselves.

Not sure either way? Budgeting with a partner works with any of these tools, and the six-app comparison puts the prices side by side. If you keep your money separate, see how to track shared expenses without a joint account.
